Mr. Kilmer’s 1913 poem still resonates today. It is a lovely and classic piece that brings reverence to wondrous creation and our journey through it.
“I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a
tree.”
-Joyce Kilmer
I’ve always liked that poem, but I never realized that Joyce Kilmer was a man! Just had to do some googling.
I’ve always liked it too, and was also surprised it was a man.
My first favorite poem. I recited it in a 4H competition when I was twelve. I’m still in love with trees and poetry.
awesome!
